Research and statistics for truck
accidents and this means tractor-trailers,
is that one is involved in an accident every
sixteen minutes in the United States.

These trucks that are often referred to as
an 18-wheeler or big rig that weighs
thousands of pounds and when this
motorized metal is involved in an accident
with a regular vehicle the injuries and
damages are severe.

The injuries that can be sustained in an
accident with a tractor-trailer can be head
and brain trauma, spinal cord injuries,
broken bones and disfigurement. Many of
these accidents can also end in wrongful
death.

When an accident occurs and a big rig is involved it is usually far different
than the accident that occurs involving only passenger vehicles. The injuries
and damages are far greater and these
accidents can occur for many reasons
but some of them are that a truck of this size and weight requires more time
to come to a stop or even slow down. There are also spots that are known
as blind spots where the driver of the truck cannot see smaller vehicles.

There are also other reasons that these kinds of accidents occur, some are
the drivers’ fault and some are beyond their control and fall to the fault of the
company that owns the big rig.

These are reasons that in most cases could be avoided that are directly
related to the drivers:
  • Drivers who speed to keep schedule for their loads and the company
  • Drivers that drive aggressively in traffic to keep their schedule
  • Driver fatigue from driving more hours than they should to keep their
    schedule
  • Driving to fast for road or weather conditions, which can cause
    jackknifing
  • Not adhering to reduced speed limits on curves, bridges, road
    construction and other reasons
  • Talking on cell phones or CB’s and not fully concentrating on the road
Other reasons that accidents happen with tractor-trailers and are not
directly the fault of the driver but are the fault of the owner of the big
rig:
  • The owner or company not doing proper maintenance on the truck
  • Not keeping safe tires on the truck and possibly using re-treaded tires
    that can be unsafe
  • Not having the proper mirrors where blind spots might be on the truck
  • Brakes that have not been maintained and lights

These are only some of the reasons that the big rig going down the highway
might pose a danger to other drivers and it can clearly be traced back to the
negligence of the company, there scheduling policies and their maintenance.

As most truck drivers are not contracting their own business when an
accident does occur the motorists and passengers or families in the vehicle
need the assistance of an attorney. One who understands this type of
accident and the legal responsibilities of the trucking companies. While these
accidents are severe the trucking company will have the protection of
lawyers and the larger the company the larger the team of attorneys.
